Presidential Lies

This post will not attempt to document every presidential lie ever told – I fear no one could ever complete that task – but I will take some time to document a few of the biggies.

A few ground rules:

  • Source must be provided.
  • Sources must be legitimate – blog postings without legitimate links to the original statement are not valid.
  • I am sole arbitrator of what is considered a legitimate source.  Rush Limbaugh isn’t a legitimate source for factual information, but a link from his site to the published statement is legitimate.  Same goes for Mother Jones, WorldNetDaily, James Carville’s blog, etc.
  • Later presidents will obviously have more lies documented, as the media became much more critical after Watergate.   The rise of the Internet in the 1990’s also greatly contributes to this distortion.
  • Last and most critical, in order to be considered a “lie” for inclusion in this list, it must not be simply an opinion – it must be factually incorrect.

Without further ado, here we go.  I may take time to categorize these later, but for now they are in no particular order.  Here are a few famous ones to start with – I’ll add more when I get bored.  Feel free to send me other examples you may have.

“The first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, a military base. That was because we wished in this first attack to avoid, in so far as possible, the killing of civilians.”  Harry Truman, August 9th, 1945 (Source)

“People have got to know whether or not their President is a crook. Well, I’m not a crook.”  Richard Nixon, Nov 17th, 1973.  (Source)

“Read my lips: no new taxes.”  George H Bush, Aug 18th, 1988. (Source)

“I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.”  Bill Clinton, Jan 26th, 1998.  (Source)

“After paying the bills, my plan reduces the national debt, and fast.  So fast, in fact, that economists worry that we’re going to run out of debt to retire.”  George W Bush – Feb 24, 2001 (Source)

“We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories.  They’re illegal. They’re against the United Nations resolutions, and we’ve so far discovered two.  And we’ll find more weapons as time goes on. But for those who say we haven’t found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they’re wrong, we found them.” George W Bush, May 29th, 2003 (Source)
