Lunar Eclipse

With all the clouds in the sky, it didn’t look like we would see anything from Knoxville, but just after totality started, the clouds parted and we got to see the eclipse.  Awesome!  The moon turned a really cool shade of orange and red, and it stayed that way long enough to get some decent pictures.  My wife is copying them from the camera right now, so I’ll post a few here when I get them.

Since the kids don’t have school tomorrow, we let them stay up late and check it out.  I found a couple of sites on the web that were broadcasting live pictures, so we looked at them during the first part of the eclipse – even had time (thanks to the clouds) to do a demo with a flashlight, globe, and a softball to illustrate what was happening in the sky tonight.  Great learning opportunity, and the kids even seemed to enjoy it.  :-)

It’s moving away from a total eclispe right now, and I keep stepping outside to see the changes.  Did you know that the ancient Greeks deduced that the world was round by looking at lunar eclipses?  Yup, way before we had visual proof via satellites….  :-)

Here’s a picture we took.  Click on the image for a larger picture.
